Construction Technology I, II, III, IV

Course Description
This course will introduce the students to all of the machines that are used in the trade of construction. The students will be expected to pass a safety test before operating each machine in the lab, and pass a hands-on safety test.
The first project in this class will be to make a dog house.
The second project is a full sized storage shed approximately 10’x12’. They will learn basic framing methods and different parts of building.
In both project the students will learn how to calculate the cost of this as well as other projects by drawing a plan, finding the board feet of each kind of wood, and adding up the cost of all the components, submitting a sales proposal on each project.
Lab Fees
The dog house and full size shed are mandatory projects and must be completed by all of the students. There is no fee for these items. The pen ($5.00), cutting board ($3.00) other projects will be charged market price for board feet. Students must pay for these before they can be taken home, along with the option to purchase their dog house. If a student elects not to do the optional projects, they will be given analternate assignment, or they can do an auxiliary project they are interested in, i.e. rocking chair.
Requirements to go to Work
All students are required to complete the safety tests with 100% accuracy. All sections of the test pertaining to the tools being use used must be passed before work can be started. The parent permission slip must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the instructor. PARTICIPATION=”Going to work!”
Grading (Academic)
Grades will be computed on a percentage (100%-90% = A, 89%-80% = B, 79%-70% = C, 69%-60% = D, 59% and lower = F.) All projects, tests and written assignments will be given a point value and totaled at the end of each grading period.

Grading (Citizenship)
Citizenship grades are based upon the student’s behavior and ability to show responsibility toward themselves and other students. Intentionally damaging or stealing property belonging to the school or to other students will result in an “F” grade and student will be removed from the class. The student will also be responsible for the replacement or repair of the damage. This is an activity class!! If a student doesn’t work when he/she has the opportunity, both the academic and citizenship grades will be affected. It is crucial that a student comes to class. A student can’t work on his/her project if he/she isn’t in class, which more than likely will result in a lower grade.
Safety Violations (Minor)
When a student is observed committing a violation, the following procedures will be followed:
  1. 1. The student will be counseled and will take the safety test again.
  2. 2. The student will be counseled and parents will be contacted.
  3. 3. The student will be restricted from some or all tools and machines.
  4. 4. The student will be referred to the office.
  5. 5. The student will be removed from the class permanently.
Safety Violations (Major )
Intentionally misusing machinery or behaving in a hazardous way that could lead to severe injury to oneself or other students.
